French-born artist, Jules Tavernier, lived only five years in Hawaii but became know as the foremost painter of Kilauea volcano on the Big Island. He is the most famous of the "old master" painters that lived on the Hawaiian Islands in the 19th century, and founder of the Volcano School, a regional movement exclusive to Hawaii, together with Charles Furneaux and Joseph D. Strong. Taverrnier endeavored to capture the ever-changing spectacle of active lava flow. He painted numerous landscapes around the Big Island.
